BERLITZ LANGUAGE SCHOOLS
Do you have a propensity for language? Do you speak a foreign language, or at least have fluency in your native tongue? (I would hope so, if it's your native tongue!) You can work for Berlitz! Berlitz is a private global language school that teaches people how to speak foreign languages for job transfers, travel, or just to increase proficiency. It's mostly one on one tutoring, but classroom sessions are available as well. They have an intense training and enormous support, so don't worry if you don't have much teaching experience.

DELIVERING HOTEL BROCHURES Ok class, how many of you have stayed in a hotel? Good! That's most of you! As you may or may not have noticed, there are TONS of brochures in hotels trying to get the attention of tourists from all over the world to visit their attractions. Believe it or not, those brochure racks need to be filled! I have worked as a brochure stocker before, and it was a very fun job. All I had to do was visit certain hotels, twice a week, and restock their pamphlets. Not a bad gig. You'll need to contact the hotels in your area to see who delivers their brochures, (or if they get mailed) Every week I restocked from a storage facility, and was off on my route. It was never boring, never hard, and I got to make money just driving around town!

DELIVERING NEWSPAPERS
You may not have remembered that this job is ALWAYS around. If you have your early mornings free, you can deliver the newspaper in your local town! Some places still have evening papers, or do bulk delivery the night before, so you might not have to wake up at 2am to go to work. Of course, if you're a late owl, this type of job may be just perfect for you! Contact your local papers and find out if they're hiring. Don't forget about the weekly papers too! Those free papers that you can find at bookstores or cafe's, still need to be delivered too!

DELIVERING THE YELLOW PAGES
Looking in the paper one day, I saw an ad for delivering phone books. I never thought of that as an actual job before, and so I went to check it out. It really was quite easy, all I had to do was drive around and deliver phone books. I could do it whenever I wanted, (during daylight hours) wherever I wanted, (choosing my own routes) and it was just a nice way to make some extra money. This will not make you rich by any means…I think I averaged $6-$8 an hour, (they pay you per established route) but when I needed money, it was a good gig. Believe it or not, there are programs year-round that you can get into. You can call Yellow Book: 800-373-3280, or check out your own local phone book for information.

EXCHANGE STUDENT COORDINATOR
I'm not quite sure when my love of Australia bloomed. Probably somewhere alongside my fascination with the pop/rock group INXS, but at the tender age of 16, I made the trek to Melbourne as an exchange student. It was one of the most enriching experiences of my life, and to this day remain grateful for the oppourtunity to have gone.

There are literally hundreds of programs throughout the world, all needing coordinators or representatives to assist in interviewing prospective families, students, and welcoming travelers to your area. Some of these positions are volunteer, and some are paid. Do a search on Google, or talk to your local schools to contact companies and get more information. When I was a student, I went through American International Student Exchange, which I cannot find for the life of me online...so it may not exist anymore. But I did find the American Intercultural Student Exchange which currently uses volunteers and some paid staff to assist in placement.

LIFETOUCH STUDIOS
My mom used to have a favourite hairstyle for me. I've always had somewhat long hair, and she just loved it when I pulled my side strands up in a ponytail, leaving the back hanging down. I, personally, didn't care. And, because she's the mom, every year for my school portraits, I had that same hairstyle.

No, I'm not promoting hairdressing, nope, not one bit. I'm talking about school pictures! Lifetouch is the leading photographer of school portraits in the US, and they're always looking for representatives to go into schools for pictures. They do all the training, and you get to have the flexibility and fun of working with kids! (Especially that one 8 year old boy who insists on putting his finger up his nose!)

MARKET RESEARCH PARTICIPANT
Market research is an easy way to make money just for giving your opinion on products, services, and campaigns. You're not going to become a millionaire, but you can get some decent money every so often by participating in Forums and Focus Groups. The bugger is that you can only do one for any one company every six months. So, don't count on it for your house payment! You can get this type of work by calling up companies in the "Market Research" section of your phone book and just ask them to sign on as a research participant.

MERCHANDISING
Have you ever gone into a store, asked for help from someone who was stocking shelves, and were met with, "Oh, I don’t work here?" Well, those are merchandisers. Merchandisers are needed to fill displays, stock shelves, and do inventories for companies who don’t want their regular employees to spend time on the floor doing so. You can make a decent part time income with merchandising assignments. I worked as a merchandiser when I was going through my mystery shopping phase. I got to set my own hours, and it was easy, non-committal work. You can get merchandising work through temp agencies or in your local want-ads under "General Help Wanted."

MYSTERY SHOPPING
Yes, you can get paid to Shop! I know you've seen the emails promising $40 an hour just for shopping in your favourite restaurants and stores. Well, that's partially true. You can make a decent part-time income as a Mystery Shopper. It's an aspect of Market Research where you pretend that you are a customer and get paid to write evaluations on products and services you’ve received. I started mystery shopping in 1998, and it supplemented my puppetry habits quite fine. It's a great way to make extra income without feeling like you're actually working. You'll need to have Internet access and decent writing and observation skills, but you can choose your assignments at your leisure. To learn more about Mystery Shopping, you can do a google search, or call up your local market research companies in the Yellow Pages.

SUBSTITUTE TEACHERS
Most school districts only require a Bachelor's Degree to qualify as a substitute teacher, and ALL districts need subs! Of course, you may be shuddering as you remember the not-so-nice way that kids would treat subs when you were in school. But, teachers understand the pain of stepping into a class, and most leave simple, fun assignments, or have a movie hour to make life easier. Also, subs get paid pretty well...of course, this depends on your area, but the average that I've found is about $125 a day. The downside is that you'll be getting those early morning phone calls, but the upside is that you only have to work when you want to! Check out your local school districts and find out what the process is to apply...you might be glad you did!
