Guest Post: Eight Marketing Tips From Dr. Seuss

I was cleaning out the bookshelves in my office the other day, and was surprised to find some Dr. Seuss books that belonged to my son when he was small. As I sat there on memory lane, reading the farcical rhymes and silly words, I was struck by the wisdom of one of America’s favorite authors. He made sense on so many levels, well except Fox in Socks. I started looking at his wisdom from many perspectives and found some good marketing advice in those well drawn pages. Join me as we learn marketing from the good doctor.

Quote 1 – “

A person’s a person, no matter how small.”

Taken from Horton Hears a Who, this a great life lesson and a great marketing lesson. It reminds us to value people and customers. It doesn’t matter if your customer is an “A” customer or a “D” customer, we should value our customers. With the right treatment “D” customers can turn into “A” customers. And they all know potential customers.

Quote 2 – “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”

Awesome quote from I Can Read with My Eyes Shut! Learning new things about SEO, Direct Mail, Advertising and Branding can give you an edge over your competition and save you money as well. If you just read one marketing book every month, or even just every quarter you will be able to multiply your marketing effectiveness in no time.

Quote 3 – “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself, any direction you choose.”

Oh The Places You’ll Go offers some great advice. We get to choose if our company is a success. We can choose to market ourselves wisely or foolishly, or even choose not to market ourselves at all and let others choose our fate. We can choose to be content with rollercoaster sales and sporadic business or we can choose to convey our message to our perfect customer and see the benefit of smart marketing.

Quote 4 – “Wherever you fly, you’ll be best of the best. Wherever you go, you will top all the rest. Except when you don’t. Because, sometimes, you won’t.”

Another quote from Oh The Places You’ll Go. A subtle reminder that not everything we use to market our business will succeed. We will have some failures, but that gives us the chance to make some changes and try again. This quote also reminds me to test the campaigns before rolling out a big marketing push. When you do preliminary testing it saves you time money and possibly embarrassment.

Quote 5 – “I have heard there are troubles of more than one kind. Some come from ahead and some come from behind. But I’ve bought a big bat. I’m all ready you see. Now my troubles are going to have troubles with me!”

This quote really resonates with me. I need to realize that I can beat troubles by being proactive and not reactive. You can solve many troubles in your marketing by taking the bull by the horns and define the issue on your terms instead of reacting to the situation after it happens. Be proactive.

Quote 6 – “How did it get so late so soon? Its night before its afternoon. December is here before its June. My goodness how the time has flewn. How did it get so late so soon?”

Hand in hand with number 5, time slips away from you. We tend to get engrossed in what we are doing and let other tasks slip by. If you schedule time to do marketing tasks, and then keep that appointment, you will be amazed at how much you can get done to help your business in just a few hours a week. Don’t let the calendar escape you, tie down your marketing with weekly marketing tasks.

Quote 7 – “Today you are You, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is Youer than You.”

One of my favorites. Don’t try to be something you are not. Be you! Your company is unique, it has to be. You created it, and there is nobody like you, anywhere. Your marketing should be unique as well. Avoid riding along with national campaigns, create your own marketing message and make sure your customers hear it. Using “Got Milk” “Just Do It” and “Where’s the Beef” knock offs only remind customers of the original and make you look petty. Be yourself.

Quote 8 – “I like green eggs and ham! I like them Sam I Am!”

The entire book of Green Eggs and Ham is about trying new things. The moral is to try new things you might like them. The marketing moral is to try new tactics, they might work. If you have never tried creating a marketing message, try it. Use it once or twice and measure the response. Tweak it, hone it, improve upon it until its perfect and then employ it in every thing you do. If you never try anything new, you will never achieve anymore than you have right now.

It’s hard to find someone that doesn’t like Dr. Seuss, it’s even harder to find someone that can’t learn from Dr. Seuss.
